The OSI Group is one of America’s strongest privately owned meat suppliers, that services both retail and food service industries. The company is headquartered in Aurora, Illinois. The company was originally started by German immigrant Otto Kolschowsky in 1909. What originally was a family meat market turned into a wholesale meat trade in 1917. In 1928, the company became known as Otto & Sons. Over the next few decades, it became known for providing quality meats. In 1955, McDonalds selected it to become one of the fast food giants key suppliers of fresh ground beef patties. Because of that deal, Otto & Sons main business became supplying beef to local McDonald’s restaurants. They are also responsible for supplying food products including hot dogs, fish, bacon, poultry and vegatables.
Over the years it has grown operations throughout the world including North and South America, Europe and Asia. OSI operates 60 facilities all over the world. OSI Group has purchased several food companies such as Baho Foods in Europe and Flagship Europe, which now allows OSI Group to expand their reach throughout Europe. They also bought a former Tyson Foods Plant in Chicago for $7.4 million dollars.
In 2011, Forbes called the OSI Group America’s 136th largest private company with an annual revenue of $3 billion. Five years later, Forbes called it number 58 largest private company with annual revenues of $6.1 billion. OSI Group in the United States has operations in Chicago, Geneva and West Chicago in Illinois, as well as Oakland, Iowa, West Jordan, Utah, Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, and Riverside, California. Most recently, the British Safety Council awarded OSI Food Solutions with the Globe of Honor Award. The award was presented to them because of their environmental risk management strategies. Along with OSI Food Solutions, 18 other companies were presented with similar awards. OSI Group was praised for giving environmental protection that same effort it gives safety and health concerns. This has made the company’s operations sustainable. The award was presented to OSI after the British Safety Council performs an audit establishing their environmental risk management performance. The audit is based on a star system. Each company can earn a 5-star rating. This year all the companies nominated had received five stars.
